When your motorcycle or tractor suddenly refuses to start or experiences ignition difficulties, a faulty CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) unit might be the culprit. Before investing in an expensive replacement, consider this cost-effective DIY repair solution. In many cases, cold solder joints are responsible for CDI failures, and this method can successfully revive your unit—unless internal components are damaged beyond repair.

Before attempting repairs, verify that the CDI is indeed the source of your ignition problems. Thoroughly inspect other components including spark plugs, ignition coils, and wiring connections. Only proceed with CDI repair after eliminating other potential causes.

Gather these essential items before beginning:

• Screwdrivers (for CDI removal)
• Solder wire
• Soldering iron
• Flux (optional but recommended for better solder quality)
• Magnifying glass (optional, for inspecting small solder joints)
• Circuit board cleaner (isopropyl alcohol recommended)

1. Remove the CDI Unit: Carefully detach the CDI from your vehicle, noting all wire connections for proper reassembly.

2. Open the CDI Housing: Using appropriate tools, open the CDI casing without damaging internal components.

3. Inspect Solder Joints: Examine the circuit board thoroughly, paying special attention to connections near connectors and large components (capacitors, transistors). Look for cracks, looseness, or oxidation.

4. Reflow Solder Joints: Carefully resolder any questionable connections using your soldering iron and fresh solder. Ensure smooth, solid connections between component leads and circuit board traces. Flux can improve results.

5. Clean the Circuit Board: Remove any residual flux or debris using isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush.

6. Reassemble the CDI: Replace the circuit board in its housing, ensuring proper component alignment.
